War in Video Games

War In Video Games
(a collective of one the post on this website)

intro:I’ve been think about posting something about this for a while now and what prompted me to post this was seeing the Flyboys trailer (a link click it to see the trailer) and saw the trench part of the trailer and I though now why isn’t there a movie (or Video Game) based about the horrible trench warfare. Maybe starting at the First Battle of the Marne (which was a major turning point in WWI in which germans were stopped 43 miles outside of paris which led the both side digging trenches which started the four years of stalemate in the western front) and including many different battles from there.

another intro, a different time: Before I knew about Windows and Mac (and everyone in my grade), before I loved video games (and before some would say I loved them too much), I loved History and everything about it (and still do). I was first introduced to video games when my mom gave me a ps1. My first video game that I played a lot was MOH: Underground. I got a PS2 and continued to play war games based on World War Two but something never changed the realism (or lack thereof) in those games. MOH (and others) continued to be about a spy who saved the day in an unrealistic fashion. Sure some them include other friendly AI to make it look like a real battle, but it was essentially the same formula that they used every time, they just changed the locates, made up battles and some real battles that were chuck full of false things, and ending objectives (such prevent the nazis from detonating the nuclear bomb, cross the rhine (in an untrue fashion), etc.). I know that while the main objective of game makers is to entertain and make money I think they have a unique opportunity to teach kids about what really happened in WW Two and also WW One and the Civil in a video games that they want to buy. The only real video game that I can think of that tried this was Brother In Arms, I think that Video Game Manufactures can do more to make a realistic War Game (set in the past).

things that were wrong with Flyboys: From looking at the trailer I noticed that almost all (if not all) the German Planes were colored red. This is sad because most of Germanys Planes were painted with different (color) schemes. And also all the german planes were tri-planes (in the trailer). There were only a few german planes that were tri-planes. Also this movie took place before the United States entered the war (in 1917). There wasn’t any tri-planes before 1917 and even then there weren’t a whole lot of them made.

What I want Hollywood to include in a film about WWI: including ‘down-time’ (i.e. non-action parts of the film) that makes the viewer become emotionally attached to the characters through good dialog and other things and make it as real as possible (i.e. characters, settings, battles, locations, and vehicles (including things about the vehicles such as color).

What I want Video Game companys to include in a (umm… video game) about WWI: Make it as real as possible, make it non-linear (there are too many WW2 games that are too linear (look at the Call Of Duty 3 trailer, notice how linear it is. And as with the movies make it about REAL battles and REAL weapons, and maybe make a game about what I said up above.

Maybe starting at the First Battle of the Marne (which was a major turning point in WWI in which germans were stopped 43 miles outside of paris which led the both side digging trenches which started the four years of stalemate in the western front) and including many different battles from there

What I want Video Game companys to include in a (umm… video game) about WWII: same things about video games set in WWI except of course locations, battles, etc. And I think there should be more video games based on the lesser know battles/conflicts of WW2 such as American/Philippine armed forces resistance after the fall of the Philippines as shown in is Wikipedia quote.

Guerrilla units harassed the Japanese when they could, and on Luzon native resistance was strong enough that the Japanese never did get control of a large part of the island.

and

Japanese occupation of the Philippines was opposed by large-scale underground and guerrilla activity. The Philippine Army continued to fight the Japanese in a guerrilla war and was considered an auxiliary unit of the United States Army.

or the The Borneo campaign and other battles.

What I want Video Game companys to include in a (umm… video game) about the Civil War: same things about video games set in WWI except of course locations, battles, etc.

Make it as real as possible, make it non-linear (there are too many WW2 games that are too linear (look at the Call Of Duty 3 trailer, notice how linear it is. And as with the movies make it about REAL battles and REAL weapons [with REAL (weapon) reload times]

PART 2

This is a part two of I want more (good) WW2 video games AND more WWI/Civil War video games/movies as well

WW2 video improvement that I think is need.
To many levels that are made up or include stuff about battles that are made up
Call of Duty: United Offensive
and Return to Castle Wolfenstein
and also the Call of Duty 2: The Big Red One. Although I do think the following is wrong.”In the game. The M1 Garand cannot be reloaded until it is empty, while in real battle, it is possible.” I think it isn’t possible to reload until it is empty.

any many other (games) feature this as well

  1. Hi my friend. I enjoy to read about that as I am very interested in WW2 and games. Are you? i read about WW1 but now so much as WW2. I don’t see sites dedicated to that.

  2. I personally am very interested in WW2, I didn’t mention this in the blog that I wrote but thought junior high school all I did was research world war two, and with a few things aside I still love researching the event and people of WW2. Thanks for commenting:)
